Domestic violence occurs between people who, like a spouse or intimate partner, are cohabiting or have cohabited in the past, boyfriend or girlfriend; sexual partners living together or previously living together, parents who live with their children; siblings living together, extended family members such as cousins and grandparents; current or former housewives (roommates), Persons sharing a financial relationship such as property owners.
Studies on Domestic Violence against Men in India
Studies have shown that domestic violence against men is on the rise. According to a recent study, almost half of males in rural areas of Haryana experienced gender based violence. 51.4 out of 1000 men experienced violence from their intimate partner at least once in their lives. The most common violence against men was emotional (51.6%), followed by physical (43%) and sexual violence (39%). Victims of emotional violence included 81% who were criticized, 27% who were insulted in front of others and 3% who were threatened or hurt.
A study has found that 52.4% of men have been victims of gender based violence. The most common type of violence against men was emotional, which accounted for 51.6% of cases among 1000 men surveyed. This includes constant threats to file false dowry cases and leave the house. Among those surveyed who were victims of emotional abuse, 85% were criticized and 29.7% insulted in front of others.
Effects:
Violence is a violation of basic human rights and must be prevented, so as to reduce its impact on public health. Any violence affects life physically, mentally and emotionally. The exact impact depends on the type, frequency and duration of the violence, as well as the relationships of those involved. Violence against men may lead to denial of accepted norms within the family such as divorce or suicide in extreme cases. Suicide is higher in married men than separated/unmarried men, according to WHO data. Exposure to violence can increase a man’s risk of smoking, alcohol, and drug abuse; causing mental illness; chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer; Increased chance of getting infections, such as HIV, and social problems.
Conclusion:
The family structure and society are changing, and the same is true with norms and values regarding gender violence. Hence, their problems must be recognized as a social and public health issue, and appropriate interventions should interfere with addressing this problem. Men need help in crisis situations where they feel harassed by their spouse or in-laws.
